What is the course about?
An introduction to basic family pet obedience dog handling skills useful in everyday situations in the home and out in public places. Introduction to socialising with other dogs and people in a socially acceptable way. Incorporates The Kennel Club Good Citizen Dog Scheme Puppy Foundation & Bronze Awards aiming to help produce a dog that will walk and behave in a controlled manner on the lead, will stay in one position, allow its owner to clean, groom and inspect it, a dog that will walk and behave in a happy natural manner, under control on the lead. A dog that will return to it’s owner when called. Basic knowledge of understanding and training a dog is also covered.
PLEASE NOTE: AN UP TO DATE VACCINATION CERTIFICATE MUST BE PRODUCED AT THE FIRST MEETING.
Assessed both during and at the end of the course and if successful you are awarded a certificate of achievement or Good Citizen Dog Scheme certificate.
Is there anything I need to bring with me?
Please bring your dog, suitable and comfortable collar (NOT a choke chain) lead (NOT an extendable lead), treats for your dog, toy and grooming brush. A bed/mat is also recommended for young puppies.
A means of clearing up after your dog if accidents happen e.g. 'poop-a-scoop'
Suitable soft, secure footwear and comfortable clothing for yourself.
Is there anything else I need to be aware of?
No previous experience required.
If your dog is a puppy (up to 12 months) you are invited to register with the Kennel Club to be awarded the ‘Puppy Foundation Award’ prior to a Bronze Award.
Do not feed your dog 2-3 hours before class, offer a reduced early ‘token’ feed if neccessary. Ensure your dog is not excessively vocal or reactive to people or dogs – you MUST speak to the tutor prior to enrolment if you are unsure of your dog’s behaviour in any way.
Do not attend class if your dog is unwell or in season.
Are there any opportunities for progression with this course?
Progression to attend the ‘Improvers’ class next term is highly recommended.
