BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma in engineering

What does the subject include?
 
The course has been structured to provide a good blend of academic rigor and practical skills. Previous students have either progressed from the course into employment or chosen to continue their studies at university.
 
The course consists of the following units:
 
·        Mathematics for Engineers (x2)
·        Mechanical Principles and Applications (x2)
·        Electrical and Electronic Principles / Devices and circuits (x2)
·        Health and Safety
·        Fabrication Processes and Technology
·        Welding Technology
·        Electrical Technology
·        Principles and Application of Thermodynamics
·        Principles and Operation of 3-phase systems / Motors and Drives (x2)
 
Students on the Extended Diploma also undertake an Engineering Project and Communications module in their second year. This is an excellent opportunity for students to demonstrate the academic and practical skills acquired during the course, and an imaginative and successful project will invariably enhance a student’s job application or UCAS personal statement (if choosing to apply for university).
 
Examples of projects currently being developed by second-year students include:
 
·        Design and construction of a pulse jet
·        Design and construction of a motorcycle paddock stand
·        Designing and building an audio amplifier
·        Designing and building a set of front wheels for a scale-model traction engine
 
You are appointed a Learning Coach for the duration of the course.
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
What is the structure of the course?
 
As described above, the course is modular, consisting of 17 units (6 mandatory). To achieve the Level 3 Extended Diploma requires the successful completion of 17 units over a 2-year period. However, it is also possible to achieve a Diploma or Sub-Diploma qualification in just one year.
 
 
Is this course for me?
 
If you have a keen interest in how things work - and you enjoy building and fixing things – then you will almost certainly enjoy this course!
 
You will also need a good level of mathematical ability (GCSE Mathematics at minimum grade C – preferably on the Higher paper).
 
 
What are the entry requirements?
 
Minimum entry requirements for the course are:
 
·        5 GCSEs at minimum grade C (including Mathematics, English Language and Science)
or
·        Level 2 Higher Diploma in Engineering
 
 
 
What qualification will I gain if I successfully complete the course?
 
Successfully completing the course will lead to the award of a BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Engineering. Depending upon the unit grades achieved, this is equivalent to 3 GCE A levels.

Other relevant details?
 
The course is vocational, with strong links to industry and engineering. Depending on the interests of students, every effort will be made to arrange suitable visits to enable students to gain practical experience of commercial engineering.
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
How many hours, weeks, years does it last?
 
All BTEC Level 3 Engineering courses run over a 36 week academic year. The Extended Diploma is a two-year course; the Diploma and Sub-Diploma are both one-year courses. All students are required to attend college for approximately 18 hours per week (currently spread over 3 days).
 
 
What do I need to bring with me?
 
You will need some basic PPE (Personal Protective Equipment):
 
·        steel toe-capped boots
·        a set of overalls (both may be ordered via college)
 
A folder, dividers, A4 paper and graph paper will also be required. A scientific calculator will be needed for all mathematics and engineering units.
 
 
How can I prepare myself before the course begins?
 
You can never prepare too much!  Make sure that you have a sound grasp of the following mathematical ideas:
 
·        Pythagoras’ Theorem
·        Basic Trigonometry (SOHCAHTOA)
·        Adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing fractions
