North Shropshire College (NSC) in partnership with The New Saints (TNS) FC deliver a Football Scholarship for students over 16. The Scholars have done exceptionally well this season already, winning the West Midlands Regional 7-a-side Tournament. The Scholars were up against 15 other teams, some from very large colleges in the area, and have gone on to win.
There were several rounds prior to the final. The tournament was split into 3 groups, players had both technical and tactical challenges within an adapted format to what they are usually used to. The first game was a 1-0 win over Sandwell, the second game was a comfortable 3-0 win against Hereford, the third game saw a 4-0 victory over Stoke-on-Trent and the fourth game was a draw with Stratford. The semi-final was played against Stafford and saw the team take a 2-1 win. The final was then played against Newcastle Under Lyme which they won 3-1.
Steve Benyon, Head of Professional Phase – Scholarship and Under 19’s Manager commented, ‘We knew we would have to be at our best in an attempt to reach the National finals. We played Newcastle-Under-Lyme in the final and although we conceded a goal within the first 30 seconds, we completely dominated proceedings from there on in. We scored three break-away goals, to see us go through as winners and in April we will be representing the West Midlands in the National Tournament in Nottingham. All 12 players adapted brilliantly to the new structure, and rule changes which included no off-sides or slide tackles. It was the second time in three years the Club and College have won this tournament which is an incredible achievement.’
The team cannot celebrate for too long as they need to now turn their attentions to the Welsh Youth Cup. The first round is taking place on Sunday against Cefn Albion so staff and players are gearing up for this.
