Animal Care Level 2
- This programme will give you the fundamental knowledge and practical skills needed to work in the expansive animal management industry. This is a ‘hands-on’ course which introduces you to a range of animals, their care and their environments. It offers excellent progression opportunities and will enable you to gain the knowledge and skills needed to start working in the animal care industry.
Our highly qualified staff will provide you with the opportunity to develop your skills and knowledge. Our animal unit includes a large collection of species including meerkats, alpacas, a wide range of lizards, snakes, rodents, birds and access to livestock and horses on our farm and equine centre. The programme includes a mixture of trips, visits and masterclasses with a wide range of industry specialists. In the spring or summer term you are required to complete an industry placement as part of your course to further enhance your employability skills.
You will gain knowledge in the basics of animal health, husbandry, welfare, behaviour and biology and will gain an insight into industry standards and practice.

All full-time students are required to study maths and English at the appropriate level.

Entry Requirements
You must have an interest in animal care and be at least 16 years of age at the beginning of the course and have one of the following:
- Four GCSE at grade 3 (D) or above (including maths and English), a BTEC or City and Guilds Level 1 Diploma and equivalent Maths and English
- You will need at be at least 16 years of age at the start of the course
- You will need to complete an interview and initial assessment
- You will need to demonstrate an enthusiasm for animal care
Progression
Progression routes shown are dependent on the successful completion of qualifications and meeting entry criteria.
Study options may include:
- City & Guilds Level 3 Technical Diploma in Animal Management or equivalent level 3 qualification
- Level 2 or 3 apprenticeship
Employment options may include:
- Animal care technician in animal welfare organisations
- Assistant Kennels or Cattery technician
- Zoological collections assistant

Course Costs

Additional Course Costs
The Additional Cost, payable to the College is: £60. You will be asked to pay this or to put arrangements in place to pay this, at enrolment. Additional Costs are incurred to support teaching, learning and assessment. This includes the use of specialist and/or industry standard equipment, visits, learning materials and resources.
For this course, you must purchase personal equipment, costing approximately £120 to be used on your course. The College provides a list of items and suppliers and you purchase this equipment directly unless you are in receipt of a bursary.
You will need to purchase sufficient stationery. Courses that include work placements or work experience may incur travelling costs.We also offer a range of optional activities and visits outside of your course. These would be charged for separately and usually run subject to demand.
