BTEC First Level 1/Level 2 Extended Certificate in Music

Overview

Core units: The Music Industry and Managing a Music Product. Mandatory units: Music and Production Analysis, Music Showcase and Researching a Music Topic. There will also be a number of specialist units delivered as part of this course.

The specific aims of the course are to:

  • Build on achievement and interest developed through qualifications in music.
  • Allow learners to specialise or to deepen their understanding through the provision of a broad range of optional specialist units.
  • Provide a comprehensive and challenging programme of study related to music that is particularly suited to post-16 learners who have the relevant interest and aptitude to progress in the sector
  • Give learners the potential opportunity to progress to employment, or progress within employment in a wide range of job roles across the music industry, for example runner, roadie (backline technical support), stage crew, venue staff, music promotion, and retail and sales roles

  • Researching a Music Topic

What is the structure of the course?

There a is a combination of assessment styles to give you the confidence to apply the knowledge gained in the workplace – and have the study skills to continue learning in higher education courses and throughout your career. This range of vocational assessments – both practical and written – means you can showcase your learning and achievements to best effect when you take the next step, whether that’s supporting applications to higher education courses or potential employers.

The course will be taught in a practical way with plenty of hands-on learning. There will close involvement with the local music scene.

This course contains two externally assessed units.

What are the entry requirements?

  • You will need five appropriate GCSE’s at Grade E and above to study on the course or a BTEC Introductory diploma with a merit.
  • Acceptance on this course is subject to a successful interview with a subject specialist member of staff.
