Health, Social Care & Childhood Studies Level 2


This course will introduce you to the childcare and health and social care sector.

This one year course will give you a chance to experience both childcare and health and social care, providing you with information to help you decide on your future educational or career path. You will develop knowledge and understanding of child development of children from birth to five years old. In addition to this you will gain knowledge of the health and social care sector and growth and development through the life stages.

Placement Requirements
It would be beneficial to complete approx. 200 hours of work placement experience over one year (one day per week) and these could ideally be split across these vocational areas:
• Nursery
• Primary School
• Residential care home

Progression routes shown are dependent on successful completion of qualifications and meeting entry criteria.
Study options may include:
• Level 3 Diploma in Childcare – Early Years Education & Care
• Level 3 Diploma in Health & Social Care
Employment options may include:
• Nursery assistant
• Classroom assistant
• Pre-school assistant
• Care worker

What is the structure of the course?

The course is made up of 4 mandatory units that everyone takes. You will also study specialists units and students are also given the opportunity to complete a placement in a variety of settings.

Assessment consists of assignments which are graded pass, merit or distinction, practical projects and work placement based observations. You will also complete controlled assessments as part of the course.
All full-time students are required to study maths and English at the appropriate level.

What are the entry requirements?

You will normally be required to have at least one of the following:

  • Four GCSEs at grade D (grade 3) or above
  • Successful interview
  • Clear Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service check (DBS)
