E2 Independent Living Skills

Overview

A one year foundation course to support you in gaining the skills for further education, voluntary or paid work and independent life.

The course is very practical and hands on with lots of opportunities to develop skills in a practical environment. You will have the opportunity to work in the Scholars kitchen at our Oswestry Campus and develop your skills in hospitality and catering.
Based on the Walford campus, you will also be working towards units in land-based studies and independent living. This course is ideal for school leavers and mature students who would like to develop skills for independent living as well as gaining some vocational knowledge in the land-based and hospitality sectors. The vocational units you will study in hospitality will provide you with an insight into what it is like working in the hospitality industry and will support you in progression into this area of work or further study.

Study options may include:
• Living Independently Entry Level 3
• Employability & Development Skills Entry Level 3
• Skills for Work Entry Level 3
Employment options may include:
• Paid/voluntary work in a café or restaurant
• Paid/voluntary work in a pet shop or similar
• Paid or voluntary work in a vocational area you are interested in

Course Costs
There may be optional trips relating to a unit within the course – letters will be sent out at least three weeks prior to the trip informing you of any related costs.
There will be fees for safety clothing required for practical activities within the land-based areas. Further information about this can be requested from a member of the teaching team or will be sent out with your confirmation letter once you have had an interview.
There are various bursaries available to support eligible students with course-related costs.

What is the structure of the course?

The course is very practical and hands-on with lots of chance to develop skills in a practical environ­ment. Both skills and knowledge are assessed throughout the year by the completion of assignments.  You will also complete a period of work experience during the course of the year. There are a variety of external visits which form part of your study programme and you will be appointed a personal tutor for the duration of the course.

Your skills are assessed through various methods including; workbooks, photographs, videos and witness statements.
