Overview

Learning in the College’s industry-standard salon you will develop the essential basic skills to discover your career in the hair and beauty sector.

We have a working salon open to members of the public, providing you with a real working environment and allowing you to gain a sense of how it will feel to work in the industry. The broad range of knowledge and skills gained will enable you either to seek employment or progress to a relevant Level 2 course. You will improve your English and maths as well as developing your confidence in your ability to progress. There is an
emphasis on supporting you in becoming an independent learner through individual planning, target setting and development.

What does this subject include?

Assessment is continuous and industryrelated with assignments, tests, projects and practical work. All full-time students are required to study maths and English at the appropriate level.

This course consists of a selection of the following units:

  • Shampoo and condition hair
  • Colour removal
  • Blow drying hair using different equipment
  • Prepare for hair services and maintain work areas
  • Ensure responsibility for actions to reduce risks to health and safety
  • Prepare and maintain salon treatment work areas
  • Contribute to the development of effective working
  • Manicure
  • Facials
  • Basic Make up
  • Reception duties

What is the structure of the course?

Emphasis is placed on practical skills.  Work will be continually assessed throughout the course.  The course consists of both theory and practical elements which all have to be passed in order for you to be successful.

Assessment is via:-

  • Portfolio of Evidence
  • Practical Demonstration
  • Gola online tests

This NVQ Level 1 Diploma in Hairdressing and Beauty Therapy is made up of 41 credits, 5 mandatory units and a minimum of 24 credits from the optional units.

All courses and treatments take place in our state of the art Visage Hair and Beauty Salon. The department now has sauna and steam facilities. New modern nail bars allow for a range of nail treatments. The hairdressing salon is equipped with 17 individual bays with adjustable chairs, overhead driers and storage cupboards

What are the entry requirements?

  • All applicants will undergo an initial assessment in literacy and numeracy
  • Places will be offered following a satisfactory interview and attendance at a taster day
  • Applicants will be expected to demonstrate enthusiasm and commitment to the chosen subject area
