Black History Month

October is Black History Month and at our College, we understand the importance of learning about the rich history of Black people all over the world. You are all welcome to stop at the Student Services to find out more about Black History.

Black History Month was created to focus attention on the contributions of African Americans to the United States. It honours all Black people from all periods of U.S. history, from the enslaved people first brought over from Africa in the early 17th century to African Americans living in the United States today.

Today Black History Month continues the discussion of Black people and their contributions through activities such as museum exhibits and film screenings, and by encouraging the study of achievements by African Americans year-round throughout the modern world.

There are several books available in Hereford and Ludlow library for students to read and borrow which may give them more of an insight into Black History Month eg. Reference books in relation to Martin Luther King and Rosa Parks.

Synopsis - "Rosa Parks was a young seamstress and secretary, she refused to give up her seat to a white man on the bus. Subsequently the police arrived and Mrs Parks was arrested and the battle against the ‘Bus Laws’ began. Rosa had had enough of the racial discrimination in her town and started her long hard-fought protest for civil rights in America for black people."

Synopsis - "Martin Luther King was a champion of freedom for his fellow American Blacks and for oppressed people everywhere."
