Our College

North Shropshire College is a vibrant and inclusive setting with education delivered across two sites, all NSC campuses cater for students with specific needs. The young person is always at the centre of their NSC support plan and their needs will be assessed on an individual basis.

The Walford campus has extensive facilities in equine, agricultural farming and a thriving exotic animal care unit. This campus is also home to our specialist Independent Living Department, supporting young people with more complex needs on their next steps in education.

Oswestry campus offers Professional Cookery qualifications with the use of a commercial restaurant, Hair and Beauty department offering use of our commercial salon, plumbing and electrical trade qualifications to name just a few.  Many of our practical courses are fully accessible or can be adapted for learners with specific support needs. The success rates currently for young people with an EHCP studying at NSC is above their peers, our holistic approach to educating young people with individual needs can be an excellent foundation for their transition to adulthood.

The two campuses are:

  • Oswestry Campus – offering a variety of vocational courses, business, IT, maths, English, Early Years, Health, Science and many more. A variety of BTEC qualifications and Higher Education programmes.
  • Walford Campus (near Baschurch) – where we offer land-based courses and independent living skills programmes

Inclusion at North Shropshire College means to provide support to enable students to meet the learning related expectations of their programme or study and behavior related expectations of the college as a whole.

Confidence building and respect are skills/qualities promoted with the aim of enabling students to enjoy, achieve and progress to the most rewarding, challenging and appropriate destination for them.

Q. At NSC how do we know if young people need extra help and what can parents do if they think their child has special educational needs?

Information on a prospective student’s needs is sought from the local authority in the form of a Moving On Plan or Education, Health and Care Plan. A formal reply is sent to the local authority confirming the support that can be offered on an individual basis.

We also find out about the additional needs of students from their school SENCO before they arrive or when students tell us on their application form, at interview or on arrival during their induction.

When we have had information from any of these sources, we conduct an assessment to ascertain the type of need and support required. If appropriate the student will be invited to make transition visits to the college in order to meet staff who will teach and support them and to familiarise themselves with the environment. We have a dedicated learning HUB at our Oswestry and Walford campus that provides tailored support and links with other professionals to meet the needs of NSC’s young people.

The College runs buses between Oswestry and Walford campuses and from Telford and Shrewsbury town centres. In addition where there is no suitable public transport the College operates a number of minibuses.

Support Information Updates and Monitoring.

Teaching and support staff set targets for students and discuss progress against these with students during tutorials. Progress is recorded and new targets are agreed with the student. In addition to times agreed with the tutor, a parent/carer can request to meet with staff supporting their child/young person if they would like the opportunity to discuss progress made in learning and behaviour. You will also be able to discuss how you can ensure consistency of support strategies at home.

For students with an Education, Health and Care Plan, an annual review will take place to which parents/carers and other relevant professionals will be invited. Student and parent/carer contributions to this are considered valuable.

Personal Tutor 

A student’s education programme will be overseen by their Personal Tutor. A range of staff will be involved in the support programme – depending on the type of support required, for example an LSA will support in-class, a teacher may provide out-of-class interventions and specialist staff may assess for Dyslexia or support deaf students. The frequency of support will depend on the student’s needs and may be available in every class or via a weekly appointment. Parents are welcome to visit the college to meet support staff during the transition meetings where the type of support required by their child/young person will be explained in detail. The whole organisation is committed to supporting students to achieve their goals and greater independence.

How the curriculum at NSC is matched to a young person’s needs

Individual programmes of study are created for students according to their needs and choices in addition to their chosen area of study. It may be the case that it is beneficial for a student to attend weekly study skills support in our learning HUB and this can be included in their timetable of study and the hours of work they commit to this may count towards their overall programme of study achievements.

Differentiated strategies to achieve learning aims are expected in all lessons and may be achieved through a variety of approaches including ensuring that:

  • support and resources are available
  • questioning establishes understanding
  • explanations take into account literacy and communication needs
  • structure and environment take into account behavioural needs

Support Allocation and Decisions

The decision is made based on student need and the value that we place in developing independence and resilience in our supported students to enable future success. Students needs will firstly be assessed based on information from the local authority where a student has an Education, Health and Care Plan or on information from their previous school where they do not. Meeting parents and prospective students is also key at this point. Shropshire Youth (Careers Wales) will provide advice to assist the College to make the decision on the type and volume of support. The impact of the support is judged against the extent to which students have met their agreed targets. Their attendance, success on their course and where they progress to are also effective indicators of success as they demonstrate the extent to which the student is engaged with their learning and preparing for adulthood.

Students with Education, Health and Care Plans are allocated the support agreed in the reply to their Moving On Plan. Where costs of support rise over £6,000 per year, the local authority pay for the additional costs from their High Needs allocation. Students without Education, Health and Care Plans will still be supported based on their needs, reasonable adjustment required and resources will be allocated based on College assessment.

Extra Curriculum Activities i.e. Trips

Feeling part of the college community and enjoying the experience of college is an essential part of student well-being therefore enrichment activities take place weekly throughout the academic year. They are led by student requests and designed to engage students in the college community. Enrichment activities should be accessible to all and reasonable adjustments will be made to ensure students can access all activities, trips and events. Students, parents/carers are often best placed to advise on how best to plan activities and trips and discussions on this will be welcomed. Risk assessments for all offsite activities are essential.

Support is essential for a young persons overall well-being 

Student well-being is managed by their Personal Tutors. Personal Tutors may be accessed weekly or as required to support student progress and to advise on referrals to other specialist support agencies. One-to-one and/or group tutorials take place weekly to ensure that students are given the time and opportunity to talk to their tutors about individual needs and concerns. Group tutorials are an opportunity for students to develop a broad awareness of factors affecting individuals and society as well as skills of communication and reflection.

Social, emotional and behavioural difficulties are assessed and supported to enable students to develop strategies to manage their behaviour and strengthen their social skills. Interventions are in small group and one-to-one support sessions where specific targets are agreed and engaging activities to achieve these take place. Specific interventions target anger management, problem solving, reflection and understanding of self and others. Students may require advise to ensure their physical and mental health and well-being are supported. At NSC we strive to work with young people to improve and develop their social skills in preparation for progression and adulthood.

Physical needs of students may be met via resources, environmental accessibility or adjustments to timetables. Other professionals are liaised with to ensure physical needs are understood and parents/carers are informed clearly of the extent to which physical needs may safely be met in the college environment.

Training for staff supporting young people with SEND at NSC. 

Staff have a variety of qualifications, based on their areas of specialism, including Postgraduate qualifications in Dyslexia Teaching and Assessing, Degree in Education and Teaching, Teacher Training, Level 2 and 3 Supporting Teaching and Learning and Level 2 Working Together to Safeguard Children and Young People. The NSC support team have regular professional updates to share practise and keep up to date with sector standards.

Accessibility at NSC

The college is fully accessible for wheelchair users and accessible changing and toilets facilities are provided across all campuses. Access to translation and interpreting services may be made available including access to any correspondence and paperwork in a persons identified language where deemed appropriate.

Q. How are parents / young people currently involved in your education setting? How can I get involved and who can I contact for further information?

All support is conducted on agreement with the student (with the potential exception of child protection/safeguarding arrangements) and their views on how best to support them are valued. They are requested more formally on a half-termly basis when targets and achievement are reviewed.

Parents/carers and young people will be invited to annual review meetings. Parents/carers will also be invited to other reviews that take place during the year (for example parent’s evenings within the specific curriculum area). Views sought at these meetings from parents/carers and young people are crucial and valued in shaping how best to support students in their learning.

Every attempt will be made to resolve your concerns and ensure the most appropriate and effective support is in place for our students.

Q. What specialist services and expertise are available at or accessed by the school?

Counselling provision is available to all students, delivered by qualified counsellors. Students can refer themselves or request support to do this from their Personal Tutor. Staff specialising in supporting social, emotional and behavioural difficulties are trained offer out-of-class interventions.

Opportunities for interventions to take place with other professionals may be discussed based on the extent of daily need for such interventions as Speech and Language Therapy, Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy.

Q. How will the college prepare and support my child / young person to transition to the next stage of life?

When a student is preparing to move on from college they will be supported to apply to universities or jobs. With their permission, information on their support needs may be passed to other educational establishments to support their transition.

Support for Looked After Children.

At NSC we want every student to have a positive experience with us. Starting College can be exciting but for some young people this can be a worrying time if you are a ‘looked after child’ (LAC) or a ‘care leaver’ this can be particularly challenging.

Q. How does NSC help?

We have a dedicated team to support young care leavers or LAC. Our designated person for LAC is Beverly Jackson, Student Services Manager, you can contact her at or on 01691 688032. Our specialist team are friendly, supportive and will be involved with our students as much or as little as wanted by the young person.
