Personal Tutor

The role of the personal tutor

All full-time students are assigned a Personal Tutor. Personal Tutors monitor a case load of students, under the direction of the Curriculum Managers for attendance and progress. Personal Tutors meet weekly with the students to deliver a tutorial programme in which topics such as British values, safeguarding, and e-Safety are covered. All students have an entitlement to 4 1:1 meetings with their Personal Tutor throughout the year. Student progress will be discussed during these meetings, and targets are set. When appropriate, Personal Tutors will organise relevant and appropriate academic support for students according to the barriers in the way of their progress, or signpost students to other services when required by referring them to Student Services.


Under the direction of the Curriculum Manager, Personal Tutors support their students with their UCAS applications. Students have access to a UCAS Moodle site which for example, provides support with writing personal statements and helpful hints for university interviews. Personal Tutors must:

  • Provide advice and guidance regarding university applications.
  • Check UCAS applications regularly.
  • Check personal statements.
  • Write references.


The Purpose of Induction is:

  • To enable students to settle in and make an effective start to their programme of study.
  • To acquaint students with their rights and responsibilities at NSC.
  • To identify student’s previous learning, and their starting points for their learning programme.
  • To give students the opportunity to disclose personal information relating to additional needs.
  • To identify learning and other support needs.
  • To introduce students to NSC support facilities.
  • To introduce students to advice, guidance and support staff (e.g. Personal tutors, Student Services).
  • To enable students to feel comfortable and confident at College, which will help foster a positive attitude to the college experience.
  • To introduce students to college life including student enrichment activities and the learner voice.
  • To set aspirational targets so students can reach their potential.


The Personal Tutor will:

  • Support student’s learning to ensure that they reach their potential and that value is added to their potential.
  • Deliver the College’s tutorial programme during weekly tutorial sessions.
  • Conduct 1:1 review meetings (one per half term).
  • Be responsible for the general welfare, personal and social development of a group(s) of students working with Student Services (in conjunction with other agencies as/when appropriate).


The Personal Tutor will:

  • Confirm the programme of study for each student and liaise with Course Leaders/Curriculum Area Managers and MIS to ensure all documentation is accurate.
  • Review targets and monitor the attendance and academic progress of their tutees on their main programme of study and any additional qualifications such as GCSE’s and Functional Skills.
  • In conjunction with the relevant Curriculum Area Manager, liaise with parents on all aspects of academic progress and attendance.
  • Ensure all student records are kept up to date.
  • Ensure that all necessary reports required by the College are fully completed at the appropriate times, e.g. reports to parents.
  • Provide support to enable learners to access appropriate support.

Career Development/Progression

The Personal Tutor will:

  • Offer impartial guidance and information on a learner’s progression into Higher Education (HE) or employment.
  • Refer students to support from Shropshire Youth Services.
  • Collate information on tutees and produce references for draft reports for Higher Education (HE) and/or employment.


The Personal Tutor will:

  • Ensure that all students are aware of and encouraged to participate in enrichment activities.

Cross College

The Personal Tutor will:

  • Assist with the induction and enrolment of students.
  • Maintain records for tutees.
  • Be involved in the discipline of students as outlined in the Student Disciplinary Procedure.
  • Attend relevant meetings.
  • Attend consultation events with parents/guardians/carers.
  • Assist with marketing events.

A full-time student is entitled to expect that his/her Personal Tutor will:

  • Work in the best interests of students so that they achieve their potential and add value to achievement outcomes.
  • Treat each student as an individual.
  • Offer the opportunity for an individual 1:1 review meeting every half-term (a minimum of 4 one to one sessions per academic year).
  • Respect the student’s right to confidentiality, subject only to legal constraints and College guidelines.
  • Keep up-to-date and accurate records of past achievement, targets set and plans for the future.
  • Under the direction of the Student Services team, deliver a meaningful tutorial programme covering a range of topics such as e-safety, British Values, extremism, radicalisation, health and safety, healthy living and crime.
  • Be appropriately trained to be able to carry out his/her function as a Personal Tutor.
  • Keep students informed of matters of concern or interest.
  • Offer impartial information and advice and guidance on any matters affecting the student’s life in College, referring where necessary to other individuals and agencies. Supply references and reports as required.
  • Assist the student in maintaining any formal records of progress as required by College.
  • Liaise with the Head of Student Services to organise support for learning needs identified by the student and/or other College staff.
